On August 28, 2009 the music world lost one of its brightest stars. After surviving a plane crash and bouncing back on his feet, DJ AM died of a drug overdose. Despite his tragic end, Adam Goldstein continues to be a role model and source of inspiration for DJs around the world. Everyone wants to know how to DJ like DJ AM but only few people can reach such a legendary status.
DJ AM was much more than just a DJ. He was a producer, songwriter and co-owner of a management company called Deckstar with Steve Aoki. He worked on albums for countless artists, from Will Smith to Papa Roach. He was also a die-hard sneaker-head with a collection of over 900 pairs of shoes.
The music of DJ AM knew no boundaries. He was in the rap-rock group Crazy Town but he also scratched on albums by Jay Z and Madonna. Celebrities loved to hire him for their private events too. DJ AM performed at private parties for Hollywood A-listers such as Jim Carrey, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashton Kutcher.
At one point in his career DJ AM signed a contract with Caesar’s Palace’s Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas. For one year he played at the venue every single Friday night. He performed on various award shows and also appeared as himself on popular television shows like Entourage and Punk’d.
One of the most interesting aspects of DJ AM’s professional life was his creative partnership with Travis Barker. They collaborated frequently and would perform live under the name TRVSDJAM. The mixture of live drum beats and scratched records drove audiences crazy, especially considering it was coming from some of the best artists in their respective fields.
Before his death, DJ AM was involved in the development of DJ Hero. He served as a consultant to Activision, created exclusive mixes for the game and allowed his image to be used to create a playable avatar.
One of the last things DJ AM did was appear as himself in Iron Man 2 DJing Tony Stark’s birthday party. Both the game and the movie are dedicated to his memory.
It’s no secret that people want to learn how to DJ like DJ AM, it's a massive dream to have but anything with hard work and serious belief is possible, the trick is to never stop learning so you can become the best DJ possible. Work hard, practice hard and your dream might just come true.
